Ebenezer Obey receives N3m royalty

Tony Okoroji presents Ebenezer Obey his certificate of royalty
Revered Juju turned Gospel singer, Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi was on Saturday, December 15, 2012 presented with a cheque for more than N3.06 Million as copyright royalties by Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON).

COSON says the payment is ‘Obey’s share’ out of the recent N100 Million Naira royalty distribution. Obey who personally received the payment, said it is sad that ‘Nigerian artistes could receive royalties for their music used in some other countries but not one kobo for
their music used in their own country’.

COSON chairman Tony Okoroji who presented the cheque, told journalists that ordinarily, the cheque would have been sent to Evangelist Obey quietly as is the case with hundreds of others but that the Obey chose to make it public so that Nigerians know that the society’s royalty scheme is indeed true.

Among the different music industry personalities present during the presentation were Banky W, Azeezat Allen, Efe Omorogbe, Obi Asika and Audu Maikori. Others included Segun Demuren and John Ewelukwa Udegbunam (President, Music Label Owners & Recording Industry Association of Nigeria).
