ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s secret police said Wednesday they broke up a terrorist group backed by “Iranian handlers” who wanted to assassinate a former military ruler and gather intelligence about locations frequented by Americans and Israelis. The State Security Service, responsible for domestic spying in Africa’s most populous nation, offered no details about who actually controlled and bankrolled the group. However, it said it had arrested three suspected terrorists, including the group’s leader, before they could launch attacks. The leader’s “lieutenants successfully conducted surveillance and gathering relevant data ... (for) possible attacks,” secret police spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar said, reading from a statement. “He personally took photographs of the Israeli culture center in Ikoyi, Lagos, which he sent to his handlers.” The service identified the leader as Abdullahi Mustaphah Berende, a 50-year-old leader of a local Shiite sect in Ilorin. Sold by aunt, raped by ‘Good Samaritan’

Image
Ideally, at the age of 14, a child ought to be in secondary school. Being a formative year, parents and wards know that they have to provide the child with the best so as not to mar them for life. Such is not the case of 15-years-old Abigail (not real name) who was sold into child labour by her aunt. She left Togo and was brought illegally to Lagos by the aunt. At 15, she has never been toschool. The dark complexioned girl, who now speaks Yoruba, is about four feet tall. She told WeezMilla Entertainments that her ordeal began when her aunty took her to a woman who claimed she could get her a job. She got a job quite alright, but the price she paid was far from what she bargained for. Abigail, who spoke through an interpreter, said, “I have never attended a school in my life. I used to stay with my aunt and her husband in Ikotun, Lagos. “She brought me to Nigeria from Togo. Last year, my aunt took me to a woman who claimed to be able to get me...

Uru Eke Uru Eke is gradually carving a niche for herself in Nollywood. The UK returnee explains how acting lured her home You were on CNN to talk about Nollywood. Reliving the experience, how did you feel especially being a newcomer in the industry?  It was one of the best calls I got last year and it is an experience that will stay with me for a long time to come. I was and I’m still excited about it so much that I have archived my interview and will always reference it.  Vladimir Duthier, the CNN correspondent who interviewed me, is a very good friend of mine and I am honoured to be picked to feature on ‘Inside Africa’. Did you relocate because you felt you were not doing well enough in the UK and not getting great opportunities to display your talent? I was doing exceedingly well in London and had a fantastic job and a fantastic life. My job was very demanding and high-pressured and I was unable to do anything else but work. I did do s...

‘I need a woman in my life’

Olu Maintain His real name is Olumide Adegbulu but he is popularly referred to as Olu Maintain. An accomplished artiste, the Yahooze crooner, is one of the most extravagant artistes in Nigeria.  In this interview, he opens up on his lavish lifestyle and the entertainment industry Is it right to describe 2012 as your comeback year? I think that will be a fair assessment because prior to 2012, l had some level of hiatus locally for about two and a half years. Last year, I redefined my brand and it was very refreshing to test the waters and reaffirm that the brand is still so much in demand. It was a year that defined the second phase of my career and I see myself as starting over again. What do you mean by ‘the second phase’ of your career? The first phase lasted for about 14 years. Then, Olu Maintain evolved from Maintain, the group, to Olu Maintain, the solo artiste that has seen it all and done it all. When you are in that state of mind w...

10 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Getting Into A Serious Relationship

Image
Let's say you've been careful about the people you date. In time, you'll probably find yourself liking one person a lot. It looks like it's getting serious. If you find yourself moving in this direction, or if you are already in a serious relationship, here are other questions to think through and to talk about together: 1. Is our relationship about mutual trust? A relationship can't survive without honesty and openness. If lies creep into the relationship, it's time to get truthful, or call it quits. 2. Can we be ourselves when we're together? If you have to be somebody you're not, or if either of you feels you must put up a front, then you're in the wrong relationship. 3. Are either of us overly possessive? Words and phrases like "smothered" and "jealous" come to mind. If one of you can't move without the other one knowing it, then possessiveness is a big problem. If this happens, both of you need some space,...

Redeemer’s University Expels 28 Students for Allegedly Failing Drug Tests

Investigations by The Nation have revealed that Redeemer’s University, an institution owned and run by the Redeemed Christian Church of God has expelled 28 students for allegedly failing drug tests. The tests, WeezMilla Entertainments learnt, were conducted last November for 42 students, who were asked to go for “routine tests”.. After resumption this year, some of them were told that they “tested positive” and last Friday, some of those who “tested positive” got expulsion letters; others got theirs on Monday. Some of the affected students told WeezMilla Entertainments that the University authority never told them the purpose of the test and did not show them the results. They also claim that they were not given a fair hearing. “I only saw in the expulsion letter that I tested positive to hard drugs. I asked for the result of the test, but they didn’t show me. Even if they won’t show it to me, they should at least show my parents the result,” a student said. “They should...

Last Name Drama: Kanye Sad Over Kim K's Refusal To Change Her Last Name.

Image
If there's one thing that Kanye West should have known before buying an $11 million mansion with Kim K, is that Kim is never letting go of her world-famous last name. The marriage-tradition-observing Kanye seems to be very upset with his heartthrob Kim not wanting to change her last name for him. A source told Star Magazine: "Kanye is very disappointed and upset about the whole thing but Kim refuses to budge." Didn't Kanye know that Kim is a really adamant person, she always gets what she wants? Just like how she went on to marry Kriss against the opinion of her family. Apart from that, it is also being said that she thinks their soon-to-be-born baby should bear her last name since it's become so famous on its own. As much as Kanye might let Kim stay a Kardashian, we don't think he'll allow that for his baby- that's like robbing him off his fatherly pride. Kim obviously doesn't want her show to be 'Keeping Up With The Wests.' He...

Pastor to Sue Forbes for Listing Him Among 'Richest Pastors' in Brazil

Image
A recent report by Forbes magazine listing the richest pastors in Brazil has sparked criticism of evangelical leaders in the country. One of the pastors mentioned in the list, Silas Malafaia, has promised to file a lawsuit against the magazine for its "shamless" report. Other evangelical leaders have also spoken out against the news saying it presents religion as a profitable business and infringes on the private finances of individuals. Forbes carried out an investigation into the net worth of the most popular evangelical leaders in Brazil, allegedly basing the figures on numbers reported by Brazil's Public Ministry of the Union and Federal Police. The magazine said it also used estimates of the value of each pastor's private holdings, Brazilian media has reported, including magazines Veja, Exame, IstoÉ, IstoÉ Dinheiro and newspapers Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo and O Estado de S. Paulo. The investigation listed the five wealthiest ministers as: ...

Married Female Teacher Arrested For Sleeping With 7 Of Her Students

Image
Georgia high school teacher DaNita Wilson was arrested Tuesday after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) launched an inquiry into her conduct.. The married, 32-year-old math teacher is accused of having s*x with seven students, according to multiple reports. Wilson is facing at least seven counts of s*xual assault, however more charges may be added since the investigation is still in progress. While six of the Charlton County High School students in question were older than 16 — the age of consent in Georgia — at the time of the alleged crimes, one student was 15, assistant special agent Stacy Carson confirmed to CNN. Notwithstanding the ages of the male pupils, having s*x with a student is classified as a felony for teachers in Georgia, district attorney Rick Currie told the Florida Times-Union. The maximum sentence for such a crime is 25 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. Wilson’s sentence could extend to 50 years in the case of the underage student. GBI began ...

Mali finish third at AFCON

Image
Seydou Keita (Gallo Images)   Port Elizabeth - History repeated itself on Saturday, after a first-half Mahamadou Samassa header and an early second-half Seydou Keita strike guided Mali to a second successive third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as the Eagles defeated Ghana 3-1 at a soaked Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. The fixture was a repeat of the 2012 Afcon third-place playoff, when Mali defeated Ghana 2-0 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. With cloudy conditions persisting, heavy rain started to fall half-an-hour before kick-off, making conditions increasingly difficult for both free-flowing sets of players. The Ghanaians dominated the early exchanges and were in with the first chance after five minutes, but skipper Asamoah Gyan's tame effort on target failed to trouble Mali goalkeeper Soumbeila Diakite, who made a routine sav...

Key men to watch in the Afcon final

Image
Nigeria have graced the final of the African Nations' Cup six times before and won twice. For Burkina Faso, it's opening night and all the emotion and nerves that go with it, which is exactly why most aren't expecting them to win it. Stephen Keshi's Super Eagles are favourites, although even they have surprised some with their run to the final. But after handing out defeats to Ivory Coast and Mali, two of the more likely candidates for the last two, it seems Nigeria's path is clear. Even if isn't, at least people in the country will be able to watch the final on terrestrial television. Unless they had satellite cables before this, it will be their first viewing of the competition after the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria reached a deal over rights fees. Should the fixture air as planned, these are some of the players to look out for: Jonathan Pitroipa The diminutive winger is set to play despite being sent off in the semi-final because...
