D’banj wins ‘Best African Act’ at 2012 MOBO Awards

D’banj has been named ‘Best African Act’ at the 2012 edition of the MOBO Awards. The hit maker clinched the title tonight, Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, UK, where the awards is being held. D’banj beat fellow Nigerian pop acst Psquare as well as his other African counterparts  Fatoumata Diawara, The Very Best, Spoek Mathambo, Fally Ipupa, Sarkodie, Cabo Snoop, Camp Mulla  and  Amadou and Mariam to walk away with the coveted prize. Last year, D’banj was also nominated but was beaten by Nigeria pop singer Wizkid . This will be his first ever MOBO award which sees him join the list of past Nigerian winners  2face Idibia  (2007)  9ice  (2008) and  N neka  (2009). D’banj recently lost out of the MTV Europe Music Award ‘Best Worldwide Act’ category.

Biggest winner of the night – Emeli Sande walked home with three awards Scottish recording artist and songwriter Emeli Sandé turned out the biggest winner at the 2012 Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards which took place on Saturday, November 3, at the at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, UK. Sandé walked away with three awards – ‘Best R&B/Soul’, ‘Best Female Act’ and ‘Best Album’ for her 2012 debut release ‘ Our Versi on of Events ’. British rapper Plan B followed closely with two awards for ‘Best Male Act’ and ‘Best Hip Hop/Grime’ category. Nigerian pop singer D’banj won the ‘Best African Act’, taking the reins from Wizkid who picked up the award last year. ROC Nation act Rita Ora was adjudged the ‘Best Newcomer’. US R&B-HipHop girl band TLC were awarded Outstanding Contribution to Music, with singer, actress and TV show host  Dionne Warwick receiving the MOBO Lifetime Achievement Award. Elton John Freed From Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Over 'Nikita'

Guy Hobbs claimed 'Nikita' is a rip-off to his 'Natasha' song, but a district judge said the similar lyrics are common in love songs and the theme is too general. Elton John is freed from the accusation that he lifted off the words of his 1985 hit "Nikita" from a song by a photojournalist slash songwriter Guy Hobbs. A federal judge has dismissed the lawsuit filed by Hobbs after John argued that he would never steal lyrics from a little known songwriter and that the theme of his song is too general. In Hobbs' claim, he wrote a song called "Natasha" 29 years ago after he got romantically involved with a Ukrainan waitress on board a Russian cruise ship. His ballad talked about the impossible love between a Western man and Ukrainian woman during the Cold War. He then sent the lyrics to several music producers but did not get published. Hobbs said he found out about John's "Nikita" in a song book in 2001...
